Our approach
Reunification fails on details: who has the roster, where parents go, how identity is verified, who speaks to the media. We build the plan around student and parent accountability, select and prepare reunification sites, design the communications and records, and then exercise it with the school and its partners.
Reunification planning
A plan with every role filled.
- Accountability procedures: Student, staff, and visitor accountability from the first minute of the incident.
- Reunification sites and layout: Primary and alternate sites, with layouts, flow, and staffing for parent check-in, verification, and release.
- Communications: Parent notification, public information, and media management during reunification.
- Records and verification: Release records, identity verification, and custody considerations.
Testing and sustaining
The plan is not done until it has been run.
- Reunification tabletop: A facilitated walk-through of the plan with school staff and partners.
- Functional reunification exercise: An exercise of the reunification site with role players as parents.
- Staff training: Training for the staff who hold each reunification role.
- Annual review: Updates for staffing, facilities, and lessons learned each year.
Why High Street?
High Street has designed reunification exercises with districts and the agencies that support them, and our sheltering and mass care experience, including the Fairfax County full-scale exercise, applies directly to running a reunification site.
